Forensic Nursing (Generalist) Portfolio Certification

This new portfolio-based certification pathway was designed in collaboration with the Canadian
Forensic Nurses Association (CFNA) and recognizes the knowledge, clinical expertise, and
professional contributions of nurses practicing in forensic settings across Canada. The program
provides an opportunity for experienced forensic nurses to demonstrate specialty competence
through structured evidence submission aligned to national standards of practice.

Who Should Apply

The Forensic Nursing – Generalist Portfolio Certification is designed for nurses who:
  • Hold active registration in good standing with a Canadian regulatory body
  • Practice in forensic nursing across diverse clinical, community, or institutional settings and have a minimum number of 1950 hours of practice in the last 5 years
  • Demonstrate competency aligned with current forensic nursing standards
  • Are committed to evidence-informed practice, professional development, and specialty excellence

Application Fee

The application fee structure is as follows:
- $588 CAD – CNA Members
- $780 CAD – Non-Members

Membership status will be verified at the time eligibility is confirmed.

The application fee covers administrative review and processing and is non-refundable once the application has been assessed by CNA and determined to be complete and eligible for peer review. An invoice will be issued only after eligibility is confirmed. Peer review will not commence until full payment has been received.

Where can I find the detailed portfolio requirements?

All portfolio requirements are available directly within the application platform.
Once logged in, you can view the full requirements by clicking on the navigation tabs located at the top of the page. Each tab outlines the required evidence, documentation expectations, and submission guidance for that domain. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review each section prior to submission to ensure completeness.

When will I be invoiced?

An invoice will only be issued once CNA has reviewed your application and determined that it is complete and eligible to proceed to peer review.

When does peer review begin?

Peer review begins only after full payment has been received.

Is the application fee refundable?

No. The application fee is non-refundable once the application has been assessed and deemed
eligible for peer review.
